Design Thinking

I am wondering about...
1. A diagram that was shared on Twitter by @extremebydesign @k12lab 
2. An RSA you tube clip on Empathy shared on Twitter by Ken Pullar
3. Extreme by Design The Movie

I'm wondering about these because, I believe teaching in a way that furthers student capacity to be innovative,improve their ideas and work with their personalized ideas of play, passion and purpose is of central importance to teaching and learning in the 21st century. I have a hunch Design thinking is nudging all this forward with a fluidity that engages and demands imagination, creativity, change and collaboration towards solutions.

The extreme design team believe the key to nudging Design Innovation forward is Empathy

It is possible that classroom teachers need to be actively attentive to the increasing presence of Design Thinking. Perhaps Design Thinking is able to assist me to interrupt  classroom 'business as usual'.
If so, Design Thinking  must have the capacity for my teaching to move away from being teacher led learning to Student directed - Student determined learning.

The move away from teacher led learning is discussed by David Price @DavidPriceOBE in his book OPEN: How we'll work, live and learn in the future.
Price discusses the shift from Pedagogy to Heutagogy.

Design Thinking's relationship to Knowledge Building...

At present I think Design thinking is all about knowledge building. Building and creating with others, a future that adds value and new ideas.

Design thinking as I currently understand is one way knowledge building can be achieved.

As Jane Gilbert writes in The New Zealand Herald:
it is "What we do with knowledge that really matters."

The process of doing something with what we know. 
The improvement of ideas and connecting with community. 

As  Prof Carol Chan wrote, Knowledge Building is when
"Students work together to create and to improve ideas that add value to the community" 
(Scardamalia & Bereiter, 2003)


Questions I'm thinking about...

Q.How can I utilise Design Thinking into my classroom maths program?

Q. How does design thinking explicitly sit with Sugata Mitra's @Sugatam work on Self Organised Learning Environments? The SOLE Toolkit

Q. If empathy is the key, is it already present in my classroom and school and would I explicitly recognize empathy it if I saw it?

Q.Whats is @MathsPirates relationship to Design Thinking and why might Design Thinking be important?

@MathsPirates Uses physical materials applied to real mathematical problems. 
Design thinking may be able to shift @MathsPirates from being less teacher led learning towards student directed learning, increasing the possiblity of experiencing student determined learning! Some thing to seriously aspire to!

During November 2013 I was fortuneate to be able to attend the Knowledge Building Symposium in Dunedin, New Zealand. Furthermore, I had my first experience of publicly sharing with colleagues some of my thinking and teaching practice. 

I think Knowledge Building is a significant foundation stone in the realising of 21st Century Teaching and Learning, yet I experience increasing uncertainty as to how knowledge building looks and sounds within our diverse communities.

My colleague Juliet Twist considers that perhaps this is a good sign. I'm holding onto that thought.

I'm including the speakers & presenters in this post as these amazing teachers; primary, secondary and tertiary are nudging something different in their teaching. Their presentations were inspiring. Through exploring knowledge building, each teacher is engaging with interrupting 'business as usual'. WHOOOP!

 Rachel Bolstad  asked Keri Facer about future-oriented learning. Facer suggested:

"Use imagination to do one of two things:
1. To emotionally occupy a space. Think what it would be like to be there.
2. To push it as far as you can go. to say what if this happened and then to say if you pushed it a little bit further and a little bit further what would it actually be like?"

KNOWLEDGE BUILDING


WHY?
I believe teaching, learning and the development of a knowledge creating culture must engage with Energy - Vitality - Movement. Because knowledge in the 21st Century is about movement. Everything must move. (yes teachers & students!)

WHAT?
When each of us understand the why.. the what will just follow. The 'What' will always be different!

HOW?
The bringing together of two different ideas and creating some thing new from this. This is some times reffered to as the space in between or the third space.

WHEN?
I believe Knowledge Building is a way of life. A way of viewing the world with a lense that views the spaces inbetween as valuable and intrinst to working in an unknown future. 

WHO?
Knowledge Building is multidisciplinary. We are completely in it together!

WHERE?
Where ever you happen to be thinking, dreaming and doing.
